The Importance of Remembering God’s Faithfulness
It is important to remember the many ways God has helped us in the past. He has covered and directed us during tough times. This remembrance helps us keep faith during difficult moments, like job loss and other stressful events. God is unchanging. When we remember His past deeds, it becomes easier to uphold our faith in Him during challenging times.
The Bible is full of reminders to think back and remember when you face trials in your life. When God’s people stopped remembering God’s goodness they became fearful and doubting.
The opposite was true for those who continued to remember God, they became strengthened in their Faith again. Remembering God’s faithfulness helps give us peace during times of distress and confusion.
All of our lives consist of different seasons. Seasons of happiness, seasons of quietness and seasons of pain; But God does not change during any of those seasons. We can look back on our lives at times when God has helped us. We can trust that He will continue to do so.
The psalmist would remind himself of what God had done for him in the past. He looked for hope again (See Psalm 77). This tells us that remembering the past helps us to live by our Faith today.
When we remember how faithful God has been in our lives, we see that we are not alone. This reminds us that we are not alone in going through hard times. He is still with us today. He will continue to be there for us.
What does the Bible say about remembering God’s faithfulness?
Remembering and celebrating God’s faithfulness is illustrated throughout the Bible. Many stories in the Old Testament recount how God freed His people from slavery in Egypt (in Deuteronomy 8).
He instructed them to remember their deliverance. Remembering what God had done for them would give the Israelites the confidence to believe and trust.
They would know that He would do the same for them in times of trouble. They look back and see the greatness and power of God during the times He had saved them.
King David wrote many of the Psalms to remind himself of how God had rescued him from danger. These Psalms also celebrated the great inner strength God had given him (as in Psalm 103).
When David remembered what God had done in the past, his fear was replaced with praise. Believers can choose to remember God’s past help during difficult times. By doing this, their faith will be strengthened.
Recognizing God’s faithfulness does not mean to dwell upon the past. Instead, it means to draw strength from the past. We must trust in God’s current and future help.
Remembering God’s Faithfulness during Good Seasons
Life is at its best during good seasons, when everything seems to be going well for us. We have received answers to prayers, needs have been supplied, and generally speaking, life has become easier.
During these times of blessing, it is easy to look around at the good things that you have. Yet, you might forget the very One who has supplied that blessing to you.
The Word of God gives us a clear warning concerning this matter, where He reminds His people not to forget about Him when they become comfortable and prosperous (Deut. 6).
When a believer forgets about God as his source for good during times of prosperity, their faith erodes. It can reach a point where that believer has very little faith in God left.
In Good Season we remember the faithfulness of God by being thankful to Him for everything. Our words of gratitude show our attitude of being grateful to God for all that He has provided (James 1). Gratitude keeps our hearts humble and connected to God.
Good Seasons allow for us to strengthen our faith by storing up reminders of God’s Grace. During a calm season, we build strong reminders of God’s goodness. These stored reminders help us develop the strength to endure in times of trouble.
By remembering God’s faithfulness during Good Seasons, we do not just honor Him for what He gives us. We also honor Him for who He is!
Remembering God’s Faithfulness in Hard Seasons
Hard seasons can be filled with grief, despair, and waiting on the Lord for answers. During these seasons, it can seem like the Lord has turned His back on us. It is during these times that doubt and fear will often arise from not getting answers to our prayers. Still, it’s important to remember how God was faithful to you in the past.
The Bible teaches us that God’s people remembered God’s faithfulness. They did this when facing their worst trials. God’s people remembered that God had been faithful to them in the past. This helped them regain their hope (Psalm 42).
Remembering God’s faithfulness will not take away the pain of the current season. It will not remove the anxiety either. Nevertheless, it will allow us to trust God in our current situation.
No matter how hard the season may seem, God’s faithfulness has not changed. God is still at work even when everything appears to be the same (Lamentations 3). If we remember this fundamental truth about God’s nature, we will have strength to endure difficult times with patience.
We can look back at the work that the Lord has performed in our lives. This reflection shows us how God has helped us through past trials. If God was faithful to us then, we can trust Him now. We can also trust Him to be faithful in the future.
Hard seasons may be long. They may seem like they are never going to end. Still, they are not the conclusion of our lives. God’s faithfulness gives us the strength to persevere through to the end of this season!
How Remembering God’s Faithfulness Builds Strong Faith
Our faith becomes stronger when we remember what God has done in the past. We become afraid when we do not remember what God has done historically. Nonetheless, we become more faithful when we remember the past.
The Bible is full of examples of God’s people being afraid of new challenges. They found courage by remembering the victories that came before (see 1 Samuel 17). The act of remembering helps us trust God again.
Not only does remembering create faith, but it helps us to fight against doubt. When we become anxious about something, we can look back. We can see all the times when God had not failed us before. Remembering these occurrences builds confidence, not in ourselves, but in God.
Faith is not built only in times of trouble. It is built daily through the remembrance of God’s goodness. Each time we remember when we prayed and God answered our prayers, our faith grows a little bit more. Our faith also grows when we were carried by God along the way.
Once believers write down the faithfulness of God, they stop asking if God can do something. Instead, they start declaring that God has already done it.
Practical Ways to Remember God’s Faithfulness Every Day.
Recalling God’s faithfulness every day is not an overwhelming task. Through simple daily routines, the faithfulness of God can stay alive in a person’s heart and mind. This is possible as long as he chooses to follow them.
One very helpful method is to record the prayers that have been answered by God. Whether the prayer was answered in a small or large way, record it in writing. You will then have a reference point to look back to later (see Habakkuk 2). This reference will serve as proof of God’s faithfulness to you.
Your testimony about God’s works in your life is an excellent way to remember God’s faithfulness (see Revelation 12). Sharing your testimony with others not only encourages them. It also strengthens your faith and reminds you that God is still working in your life.
Reading the Bible on a regular basis is another way of remembering the faithfulness of God. In the Bible, we find many stories that bear witness to God’s faithfulness throughout the generations (see Romans 15). When we read stories of God’s work for others in the past, it builds our confidence. This confidence aids us in trusting God with our own lives.
Teaching our children and new believers about the works of God helps us remember God’s faithfulness (see Psalm 78). Talking about God’s faithfulness keeps His name alive in our homes and in our churches.
Remembering God’s Faithfulness for the Future.
Being aware of God’s faithfulness is not merely looking back. Keeping in mind God’s faithfulness allows believers to place their confidence in God about what is yet to occur.
Looking back at God’s direction thus far helps remove the anxiety of what is to come. The Bible encourages us to rely on God about tomorrow (see Proverbs 3). God has perfect foreknowledge; He knows what will occur, even if we don’t. Remembering His faithfulness yesterday will allow us to accept that.
Many are troubled by unanswered prayer or why there are delays in receiving their blessings. Remembering helps them to understand that God’s timing was and is still perfect. Even if at times it was difficult to see (see Ecclesiastes 3).
When believers think about God’s faithfulness in their past, they cease fearing the unknown. They learn to be patient and confident while waiting for what God provides.
The future is unknown to us; yet, God’s faithfulness is never unknown. Remembering God’s faithfulness allows individuals to be confident and peaceful about the future.
Conclusion: Holding On to God’s Faithfulness in Every Season.
Reflecting back on God’s faithfulness helps us to be strong throughout any season of our lives. During both easy and difficult times, we keep our eyes on God. Remembering what He has done for us helps remind us that God will continue to be with us.
The Bible makes it clear that God does not change. His ability to love, care for, and lead us remains the same (Hebrews 13). By recounting what God has done for us in the past, we can have confidence about facing today. We can also have hope about facing tomorrow.
You should take time out of your schedule to think about what God has done for you in the past. Write it down; share it with someone; and meditate on God’s Word. These three things keep our minds focused on God’s faithfulness to us.
Regardless of what season of life you are experiencing, you can continue to trust that the same God. He demonstrated His faithfulness to us earlier. He will continue to do so in the future. When you trust that fact, you will experience peace, strength and joy.
